Become a Part of 'The HUC-JIR Community Soup Kitchen in New York'

Every Monday evening, in every season, the student-run HUC-JIR Soup Kitchen welcomes over 100 homeless and hungry guests for a nutritious meal. In autumn, winter and spring we serve a hot meal - main course, side dish, bread, fruit, peanut butter, jelly, cookies, milk, juice and coffee - and after the second semester we serve take-out sandwiches, fruit, and something to drink. Volunteers from around the New York area - secondary school pupils, college students, and adults - help us prepare and serve the meals. The Soup Kitchen offers our guests not only meals but also free legal counseling by NYU Law School students, free clothing, and toiletries, as well as a sewing service.

Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah used to say...
"Without bread, there is no Torah. Without Torah, there is no bread."
Mishnah Avot, 3:17
We invite you to join our efforts. The following is our schedule:

Time Work
3:00 pm Hot meal & salad preparation
3:30 Set up dining area
4:30 Meet with Volunteers and Staff
5:00 Serve the meal!
6:00 Clean up: dining room, kitchen, bathrooms
6:30 Pizza & Learning (for groups)

*In the summer we hand out bagged meals with sandwiches, fruit, milk, and cookies, and begin food preparation at 3:30 pm. We serve from 5:00-5:30 pm and clean-up from 5:30-6:00 pm.

We understand that Monday afternoons may not be the best for you to come to HUC-JIR. Therefore, here are some other ways for you to contribute:

-Our guests always enjoy good clothing and shoes. Collect them, and we'll be delighted to pass them out. To make clothing donations to the soup kitchen, please contact hucsoupkitchen@gmail.com.

-Your youth group may want to come do a mitzvah. Please contact us at hucsoupkitchen@gmail.com.

-Our annual Beit Cafe (a Thursday in December) is our sole fundraising event. We are always looking for (real!) talent and auction items. To contribute, please contact us at hucsoupkitchen@gmail.com.

"I've worked in many Soup Kitchens in the area, and none of them have the spirit that I find here."
— Amy, high school volunteer.

We look forward to your participation in this community project.
