'I am a graduate of the School of Communal Service
(1999) and the USC School of Social Work, and am currently the Director
of Young Hadassah International. In this role, I am responsible for
the strategic planning, fundraising, program implementation, and on-site
servicing of young leadership units (18-35 year olds) in 15 countries.
I live in New York City and work regularly in Europe, Latin America,
Israel, and Australia/New Zealand.
My goal throughout graduate school was to find a career path that
would allow me to travel frequently and to interact with the Jewish
community in a variety of cultures and languages. Working with the
Hadassah International has provided a constantly evolving and challenging
environment that has fulfilled this desire. My focus has been on
group dynamics, organizational development, strategic planning,
and conflict resolution/negotiation. I have been fortunate to experience
first hand both the diversity and the commonalties that comprise
the international Jewish community.'

"I entered the cantorate to become a cantor, but more importantly,
to be klei kodesh (a holy vessel) to minister my congregation, to
teach, and to help grow as Jews. My cantorate enables me to do all
that and more, and the HUC-SSM prepared me for so many of the challenges
of my career path. In my cantorate I have incorporated so many
of my interests: computers, music history, philosophy, working with
children, and I have done so with my own brand of humor and style.
The cantorate has evolved so far from where it was 50, 40, even
10 years ago, and the HUC-JIR is the best equipped seminary to prepare
the next century's cantors."

to Judaism. If someone wants to visit and shadow me for a couple

various aspects of professional/personal life. I am proud to be
a rabbi. It is an honor to serve as a Jewish professional. Jewish
communal life should be a source of pride. My role is to serve as
a guide. A rabbi is not a monarch, not a suffering servant. I work

I have been rabbi of Judea Reform Congregation in Durham, North Carolina for twenty-one twenty-seven years. My synagogue serves the Jewish communities of Durham, Chapel Hill and surrounding areas. A large percentage of my congregation is academicians at Duke and University of North Carolina. I was ordained in Cincinnati in 1976.
After ordination I served as Assistant Rabbi to Herman Shaalman at Emanuel Congregation in Chicago. There, I was President of the local clergy group and advisor to NFTY's Chicago region.
Since coming to Durham, I have served as President of Durham Congregations in Action and worked to found Genesis Home, a shelter for homeless families. I have been deeply involved in social justice issues in my community receiving the Martin Luther King "Keeper of the Dream" Award, the City of Durham "Better Human Relations" Award, and the Elna Spaulding Medal for Social Justice. All of these were given for my work in race relations. Currently I serve as chair of the Emergency Food and Shelter program of the United Way.
I attended University of Kansas, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Harvard University where I was a Charles Merrill Fellow in 1994. I have written articles on Bible, Jewish literature, Jewish education, and Black Jewish relations for a variety of journals including the CCAR Journal. I am also a trained mediator and use my mediation skills in a variety of ways in synagogue life.
I see my role in the congregation as its primary teacher. Our congregation is strong in adult education, offering regular study on weekday evenings, Saturday mornings and Sunday mornings. There are guest lectures on Shabbat and frequent lecturer at community schools, churches, and universities.
As a rule I stay away from congregational committee meetings and programs at which my presence as rabbi is not required. The only regular meeting that I attend is that of our Board of Trustees. I work very hard at being the rabbi, not the congregation.
I am married for twenty-five years to Nancy Eisenberg Friedman. Nan is a pediatrician on the faculty at Duke University Medical Center in the division of Pediatric Endocrinology. We are the parents of twenty-six year old Joshua and twenty-two year old Abigail."

Along with Rabbi Elissa Kohen, Cantor Pamela Siskin and our
Educator Diane Berg, RJE, I serve Congregation Beth Israel, a 1200
family congregation in West Hartford, Connecticut. Our aim at Beth
Israel is to provide as many points of connection to Jewish thought,
practice and history as we can for our congregants and the community
at large. Our congregation has a large number of immigrants from
the former Soviet Union among our members, and we provide English
language instruction and citizenship training on a daily basis.
From our daily minyan, to our creative educational, musical and
religious programs for congregants of all ages, we are working hard
to help Beth Israel become a meaningful center for Jewish life and
learning at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

The rabbinate is the place where I work to educate and empower Jews to live fuller, more meaningful lives grounded in the primary Jewish acts of Torah, Worship and Good Deeds. All of this emanates from the fostering of sacred community that seeks to be with each other in times of joy and times of sorrow. As the rabbi of a suburban congregation (490 households), I spend my time working with people of all ages in a variety of settings. Holding a Masters degree in Jewish Education, my areas of interest are education, worship, and institutional change. Being a rabbi allows me to bring together all of my loves and passions. I would enjoy meeting you to discuss what being a Jewish professional might mean for you.

It was a really wonderful bash. What is more wonderful are the years
themselves. Beth Emeth was my first pulpit, starting as assistant,
then associate, then elected Senior. You should all have the senior

stay this long. The rabbinate is a wonderful experience; even with
the problems, it can be more exciting than anything one could imagine."

"Shalom! I am Alan J. Katz the rabbi of Temple Sinai in Rochester,
NY. I was ordained in 1976 and have served here since 1976. We are
a congregation that has grown from 350 families, on my arrival,
to over 625. Our congregation tries to keep its warm and small size
character even as we increase our numbers. Our team includes an
assistant rabbi, an educator, a part-time soloist and an office
manager, as well as teachers, youth advisors and other support staff.
I believe that the one to one relationships are the most important
aspect of congregational life. Besides the full scope of congregational
activities I am also very involved in the community at large, both
Jewish and general. I am significantly involved in inter-faith and
inter-ethnic work, which is seen in a positive light by the congregation.
For many summers I served on faculty at the UAHC Eisner Camp. In
addition to teaching in the congregation I have taught at a local
college over the years. The diversity of activities has been very
enriching. From a personal perspective my wife and I have raised
our three children balancing our professional community roles with
the joys and challenges of parenting."

a sacred celebration? Come by... Share in covenant... Building...

"I am the rabbi of a smaller, but growing (250 families) congregation
in Tampa that serves all ages. My day to day activities include
counseling, Bar/ Bat Mitzvah training, teaching adults and youth,
and taking part in community activities. I enjoy an exciting, challenging,
and energetic Rabbinate and I am eager to discuss this lifestyle
with anyone who is curious about this or any aspect of Jewish professional
life."
