Working With Interfaith Families in Congregational School Settings
Dr. Evie Rotstein
4 Weeks | May 29 - June 21 | Tues, Weds, Thurs | 9-12 AM | (3 Graduate Credits)
Reform congregations and religious schools have the opportunity and the challenge to integrate interfaith families into synagogue life and encourage the establishment of Jewish homes. This course will address: How do we define ethno-religious identity for members of an interfaith family? How can we empower interfaith families to make Jewish choices for themselves and their families? How can we, as Jewish professionals, welcome and invite interfaith families to become active members of our communities?
What tools and skills are most effective in inviting Jewish choices?
Dr. Evie Rotstein is the Director of the Leadership Institute for Congregational School Principals, a joint project of HUC-JIR and JTS and funded by UJA/Federation of New York. A congregational educator for 26 years, she has developed innovative programs for faculty development, teen mentoring, and parent education. Minimester Course B

The Narratives of Genesis through Medieval and Modern Eyes (H)
Dr. S. David Sperling
4 Weeks | June 5 - June 28 | Tues, Weds, Thurs | 1-4 PM | (3 Graduate Credits)
The Book of Genesis abounds in fascinating tales of the ancestors of the people Israel. Some of these tales depict our ancestors engaged in duplicity, violence and sexual activity of dubious character. The great medieval Jewish commentators attempted to account for the behavior of Israel's ancient worthies in terms of their own conceptions of Judaism. In this course we will examine selected narratives of Genesis from two perspectives: 1) The modern study of the Bible with its eye on biblical stories in their inner- biblical dimension against the world of the ancient near East. 2) The biblical stories as read within the world of medieval Judaism. Biblical and post-biblical sources will be read in Hebrew. Translations will be provided for ancient extra-biblical sources.
The medieval commentaries will be read from Torat Hayim. Facility with Hebrew texts is required | Limited to 30 students
Dr. S. David Sperling is Professor of Bible at HUC-JIR/New York. He was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary and received his doctorate from Columbia University. The author of many works on the Bible and ancient Semitic languages, his most recent book is The Original Torah: The Political Intent of the Bible's Writers. He is editor-in-chief of A New Handbook of Aramaic and its Dialects and editor of the Bible section of the forthcoming revision of the Encyclopedia Judaica.
