Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles (HUC-JIR/LA) is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by acclaimed photographer, Marvin Rand, on view from September through December 2007.
Rand's works, situated within the study environments of HUC-JIR/LA's Mercaz and the Lainer Beit Midrash, is part of an academic mission to integrate the arts into the learning experience.
Entitled Visions of Israel, Rand's photographs reflect his love for the modern State and the enchantment of its ancient surroundings, nurtured over a lifetime of visits. His camera captured the first yartzeit (one year anniversary) of the assassination of Yitzak Rabin, as well the well-known environmental work of contemporary Israeli artist Danny Caravan. A final glimpse through Rand's camera shows the desire of Israeli youth for peace.
An accomplished professional photographer for over fifty years, Rand is most widely known for his architectural photography. A graduate of Los Angeles City College, the U. S. Air Force Photographic School, and Art Center College of Design, his clients have included Charles Eames, Cesar Pelli, Louis Kahn, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Gwathmey/Siegal & Associates, William Pereira & Associates, the Museum of Modern Art, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. His photographs have been featured in twenty-three books, including Greene and Greene authored by Randell L. Makinson and Five California Architects by Esther McCoy.
Founded in 1875, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is the nation's oldest institution of higher Jewish education and the academic, spiritual, and professional leadership development center of Reform Judaism.
