In light of scientific research, should liberal Jews continue circumcising boys? What is the status of girls in the covenant of the Jewish people? Can the brit ceremonies we’ve created for newborn girls parallel an ancient ritual? This was a multi-layered exploration of texts from the rabbinic era through the contemporary world. The all-day study session feature HUC-JIR Los Angeles dean and rabbinics professor, Lewis Barth a leading expert in the area of Birth and Brit. Along with student rabbi and director of the Berit Milah Commission, Neil Schuster, Dr. Barth consider the practical implications of old and new rituals and rites for berit milah and berit bat. What do I do with the study group member who needs to argue about everything and the one who lacks confidence to voice an opinion? How can I revitalize my teaching, not to mention my own learning? This session had us spending an enlightening day with Dr. Diane Tickton Schuster, adult development and learning expert, visiting faculty of HUC-JIR, LA, UAHC Kallah scholar, and frequent lecturer on adult Jewish growth. Participants gained insight about how recent theory and research in psychology and education can help rabbis become more effective teachers as well as better learners. The afternoon was spent observing and analysing several master teachers, culled from our own colleagues. Click here to purchase audio tapes of these limudim. Participants explored the Eastern European beginnings and the New World reverberations of Hassidism. With survey materials that span the history of the movement from the 18th to the 20th century in hand, over sixty participants studied with the lively and entertaining Dr. Olga Litvak. A dynamic lecturer from Princeton University, Dr. Litvak addressed the factors that underlie the rise of Jewish traditionalism in an increasingly secular world.
