In 2003/4, the Joint Commission introduced
a new course format: Mahaloqet L'Shem Shamayim features two nationally
noted scholars in dialogue for three consecutive weeks. Each scholar presents
an approach in an hour-long presentation. In the final session, the two
scholars engage in an open conversation.
This Mahaloqet features Dr. Jack Wertheimer
of the Jewish Theological Seminary and Tsvi Blanchard of CLAL to discuss...
Post-denominational Judaism
Recent years have witnessed the development
of new religious alternatives that start with the assumption that denominations
are part of the problem, rather than part of the solution. How are we,
as a movement, and as individuals, to respond to this challenge? Representing
one side of this discussion, Dr. Jack Wertheimer of JTS will summarize
the case that has been made of late for post-denominationalism and make
a case for the ongoing role of our existing denominational structure.
On the other side, Dr. Tsvi Blanchard of CLAL will summarize his recent
report on Jewish identity formation and argue in favor of a new model
for Jewish identity construction. The final session will be a moderated
discussion, in which each scholar may respond to the other's points and
raise questions of his own.
