We Take Pride In...

Dr. Helene Dallaire, for her years of service as the Director of Hebrew Language Instruction at HUC-JIR/Cincinnati. During her tenure, Dr. Dallaire pioneered many courses in Hebrew language instruction in the Rabbinical and Graduate School curricula. She also oversaw and coordinated the Teaching Assistant and Hebrew tutorial programs.

Rabbi David Ellenson and his daughter, Ruth Andrew Ellenson, were among the 19 winners of the 2005 National Jewish Book Awards. President Ellenson grabbed the top award in the category of modern Jewish thought and experience for his work, "After Emancipation: Jewish Religious Responses to Modernity," a documentation of how modernism revitalized Judaism. Ruth Andrew Ellenson earned the top honor in the category of women's studies. Her work, "The Modern Jewish Girl's Guide to Guilt," is a collection of essays by prominent women on the existential issues that preoccupy them.

Rabbi Alfred Gottschalk delivered the keynote address at the ordination ceremony of the first Reform rabbis in post-Nazi Germany.

Rabbi Richard Sarason, Professor of Rabbinical Literature and Thought at HUC-JIR/Cincinnati, took part as a panel speaker at the Cincinnati Art Museum for opening night of "Artistic Expressions of Faith in Judaism, Christianity and Islam." The discussion was titled, "Exploring Aspects of Devotion in Judaism, Christianity and Islam," and toke a closer look at devotional practices, philosophy and history in the three Abrahamic faiths.

Iola Sims, for her years of dedication to the college institute in Cincinnati with the Maintenance-Housekeeping staff. Iola has been part of the maintenance team who has provided Dorm guests, Youth Programs and various other on-campus event with housing and food service.

Dorothy Smith, Coordinator of Archival Activities and Technology at The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives, was recently honored at the Alumni Recognition Dinner at Wright State University. The Chair of the History Department and the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts chose Dorothy as the outstanding alumna from the History Department. Over the years, Dorothy has served as a mentor for many of her students, and she has been instrumental in bringing many graduate interns to the AJA.
