Dr. Lisa Grant Granted Tenure as Associate Professor of Jewish Education at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion

Dr. Lisa Grant has been granted tenure as Associate Professor of Jewish Education at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in New York, as of July 1, 2008.

In announcing the promotion, Rabbi David Ellenson, HUC-JIR President, said, "Dr. Grant's scholarly work and her teaching have had an important impact upon the field of Jewish Education and upon our community of faculty and students. She has contributed new understanding through her research into Israel education, teaching the Bible, Reform Jewish identity, and adult learning. As a teacher and mentor, she contributes to the New York campus as a vital learning community."

A member of the HUC-JIR faculty since 2000, Dr. Grant holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan and an M.B.A. in public management from the University of Massachusetts. She earned her Ph.D. in Jewish Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in May, 2000.

She has taught and conducted research at the Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education and Melton Research Center for Jewish Education at JTS; advanced student leadership development at the Hillel at Trinity College, taught at Yachad Community High School, served as the family educator at the Commission on Jewish Education, taught at the Beit Midrash-Greater Hartford Institute of Adult Jewish Learning, and served as the adult and family educator at Beth El Temple in West Hartford, CT; coordinated high school curriculum at Temple Beth Sholom in Manchester, CT, and taught at Damp Ramah in New England. She has served as a scholar-in-residence at the Leo Baeck College-Centre for Jewish Education in London, conducted professional development seminars in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) for the World Union for Progressive Judaism and the Lokey International Academy of Jewish Studies at the Leo Baeck Education Center in Haifa, Israel, and led the Jewish Education Program for Project Kesher, fostering women's leadership development in the CIS. She has been an external evaluator for the Covenant Foundation, the United Jewish Communities, and the Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning, and been an evaluation consultant for numerous programs in the United States, England, and Israel.

Dr. Grant is the co-author of A Journey of Heart and Mind: Transformative Jewish Learning in Adulthood, Teaching Adult Jewish Educators about Teaching Bible: What They Need to Know and How They Might Learn It, The Impact of Adult Jewish Learning in Today's Jewish Community, and the author of Eytz Chaim Hi: She is a Tree of life - An Adult Bat Mitzvah Guide, Dr. Grant's extensive scholarly articles, reflecting her research and teaching interests in adult learning and religious development, organizational change, and the role Israel plays in American Jewish life, have been published in the Journal of Jewish Education, CCAR Journal, Jewish Education News, Religious Education, Conservative Judaism, Journal of Jewish Communal Service, Courtyard, and Melton Gleanings. She has contributed essays to A Dream of Zion: Americans Reflect on Why Israel Matters, Women Remaking American Judaism, Israel, World Jewry, and Identity, Education and Professional Training, and The New Jewish Teacher's Handbook. She has presented papers at American Jewish University, Network for Research in Jewish Education, Hebrew University and the University of Haifa, Brandeis University, Baltimore Hebrew University, the Jewish Agency for Israel, Wayne State University, Association for Jewish Studies, Bar Ilan University, and Wesleyan University.

She is the Chair of the Network for Research in Jewish Education, and Editorial Board Member of Sh'ma: An On-Line Journal of Responsibility and the URJ Press, a Fellow of the Institute for Reform Judaism/ARZA, Member of the Israel Education Think Tank at the Melton Center for Jewish Education at Hebrew University, and an Advisory Board Member of the Leadership Institute for Congregational School Educators of HUC-JIR and JTS, of the Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning at Temple Emanu-El in New York, and or Project EngaJE, Judaic enrichment for early childhood educators through SALES (Suffolk County Jewish Educational Services).
