HUC-JIR/NY Students and Faculty Study and Retreat at Annual Kallah

Students and faculty from HUC-JIR/NY came together at the URJ's Camp Kutz in Warwick, NY August 24-26, 2008 for the annual academic retreat Kallah. The theme of this year's Kallah was feminism and gender-related issues. Students and faculty participated in different programs from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday afternoon, including a discussion of challenges facing men in liberal Judaism and transgender issues. For a program on milestones in feminism, Rabbi Sally Priesand, C '72, the first woman ordained at HUC-JIR, came to speak to the participants.

A committee of students worked together to plan the worship services for the retreat. Rabbi Renni Altman, Associate Dean and Director of The Rabbinical School, stated that through these services and programs, "a sense of community was fostered throughout the two days." Kallah was also the beginning of the classes for the school year.
