RABBI CAROLE B. BALIN APPOINTED ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF JEWISH HISTORY, NEW YORK CAMPUS

Rabbi Carole B. Balin has been appointed Assistant Professor of Jewish History beginning July 1, 1997. This is a new tenure-line position in our New York School.

Rabbi Balin was ordained at HUC-JIR/NEW YORK in 1991 and has served as a part-time member of our faculty since 1993. She is a Ph.D. candidate in History at Columbia University where she received her M.Phil. with distinction in 1994. Her dissertation topic is "Jewish Women Writers in Late Tsarist Russia."

She has taught at the Institute for Advanced Jewish Studies in Moscow, Russia, the Academy for Jewish Religion in New York, and at the 92nd Street YMHA's Bronfman Center for Jewish Life in New York. She has contributed articles to the Journal of Reform Judaism, Jewish Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia edited by Paula Hyman and Deborah Dash Moore, and Passover and Easter: The Liturgical Structuring of a Sacred Season co-edited by Lawrence A. Hoffman.
