Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat
to receive the Dr. Bernard Heller Prize
from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion
in recognition of his contributions to betterment of humanity

Who: Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, and former Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Administration, and U.S. Ambassador to the European Union

What: The Dr. Bernard Heller Prize is an international award presented annually to an individual or organization whose work, writings, or research reflects the values and commitment to the betterment of humanity. Initiated in 1990, previous recipients of the $10,000 award include Holocaust historians Serge Klarsfeld and Raul Hilberg, Ambassador Uri Lubrani of Israel (the architect of the airlift rescue of Ethiopian Jewry), Ambassador Dennis Ross, and U.N. Ambassador Richard C. Holbrooke.

Why: For Ambassador Eizenstat's years of service to the U.S. and the American people, and for his role as Special Envoy for Property Claims in Central and Eastern Europe, where his involvement with the U.S. Government Reports on Swiss banks' activities during World War II helped make possible the historic settlement with the Swiss banks and the introspection by governments throughout the world on their roles during that time.

When: Ambassador Eizenstat will receive the Dr. Bernard Heller Prize at Graduation at HUC-JIR's Cincinnati School on Wednesday, May 31, 2000 at 3:30 p.m.

Where: The ceremony will take place at the S.H. and Helen R. Scheuer Chapel at HUC-JIR in Cincinnati, 3101 Clifton Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio.
