The Levites in Josephus
Christopher T. Begg, The Catholic University of America
Various scholars have opined, on the basis of one or other text of the Antiquities, that Josephus evidences an "anti-Levite" tendency. This article systematically examines all uses of "levitical terminology" in the Antiquities (the only writing of the Josephan corpus to use this terminology). From the examination it emerges that Josephus does not evidence any consistent, thorough-going tendency to denigrate the Levites or minimalize their role in Israel's history. While he does this on occasion, on other occasions he introduces references to the Levites and their activities where the Bible itself lacks these.
