 HUC-JIR's School of Jewish Communal Service's 17th Israel Seminar The 17th Israel Seminar of the SJCS began last week in Jerusalem. The Seminar involves 18 students from the HUC-JIR/LA campus along with students from Brandeis University's Hornstein Program and marks only the second time that the two institutions have collaborated in this study program. The students will be visiting not only the Jerusalem campus of HUC-JIR but will be meeting with leaders of the WUPJ and having the opportunity to engage liberal Jewish communities within Israel. The Seminar itinerary calls for the students to spend time in their partnership communities: Tel Aviv is the partnership community for Los Angeles and Haifa is the partnership community for Boston. In addition, students will study with Professor Jonathan Sarna of Brandeis, the Director of the Hornstein Program, and Dr. Steven Windmueller, Dean of HUC-JIR/LA, who will both be joining the program for a period of time. The Seminar will be hearing from some of Israel's leading experts, as the students examine Israel's past, its current social and political problems, and future challenges. The program will take students to various parts of the country including an assessment in the Galilee of the impact of the Lebanon War on the Israeli people and the economy of the North.
