 Dr. Alfred Gottschalk, HUC-JIR Chancellor Emeritus, Featured in Exhibition Presented in Oberwesel, Germany "An American Rabbi from Oberwesel" is the title of an exhibition featuring the life and achievements of Dr. Alfred Gottschalk, which is on view in the partially restored synagogue of Oberwesel, Germany, through November 18, 2007. This exhibition has been organized by Victor Sanovec and the Hillel Society, an organization formed to celebrate the cultural and religious contributions of Jews to their communities in the Rhineland. Widely acclaimed in the German media and German-Jewish press, the exhibition describes the vitality of Oberwesel's small Jewish community before the Second World War, and its persecution, dispersion, and annihilation during the Holocaust. The exhibition, presented in the former synagogue of the town that was desecrated during the Nazi pogroms of Kristallnacht in November 1938, is presented as part of a civic effort to promote tolerance and interfaith dialogue.
