 Pierre Schoenheimer, HUC-JIR/New York Board of Overseers Member, Funds Israel Seminar Series As part of their Israel Seminar, first year rabbinical, cantorial and education students had the privilege of hearing Hayim Yavin, Israel's "Mr Television," and Israel Prize recipient discuss the changing role of the media in Israeli society. Yavin spoke of how Israeli Prime Minister Ben-Gurion finally came around to supporting the establishment of the television in Israel despite his concerns that it would numb the viewers' intellectual capacities. He also spoke of his personal role anchoring the news, as correspondent in the US (1971-4), news editor, managing director of the Israel Broadcasting Authority and the maker of numerous documentary films. The talk is part of a series which includes a variety of guest speakers which to date have included Eli Amir, famed Israeli author, Arye Naor former Cabinet Secretary to Prime Minister Menahem Begin 1977-82) and will include an encounter with Israeli writer, playwright and recent Cannes film award winner, Etgar Keret. The purpose of these sessions is to bring students closer to the Israel experience in its many cultural and political facets. The series is generously funded by Pierre Schoenheimer, on the HUC-JIR/New York Board of Overseers.
