Rabbi Alfred Gottschalk, Chancellor Emeritus, Participates in Catholic-Jewish Conference in Rome

Rabbi Alfred Gottschalk participated in the First Lay Conference of Catholic-Jewish Relations in Rome this past October, speaking about "Vatican Relations with Israel and Islam" and sharing a Catholic-Jewish Relations panel with Father Michael Graham of Xavier University.

The four-day conference, held Sunday October 21 through Wednesday October 24 at the Vatican, convened 75 representatives from churches and synagogues across the United States and Vatican leadership to discuss challenges facing Jewish-Catholic relations and ways to build understanding. The conference was sponsored by the Interreligious Information Center, an organization that conducts programs about Catholic-Jewish relationships through dialogues, briefings, and conferences.

Rabbi Gottschalk also spoke at the opening session, describing his childhood experience of being taken in by Catholic nuns in a German school after being expelled by the Nazis.

Rabbis Jack Bemporad and Abie Ingber, HUC-JIR alumni, also presented at the conference.
