Howard Shore at HUC-JIR/NY School of Sacred Music for Master Series

Howard Shore, Saturday Night Live co-creator, rock musician, movie composer, and winner of Oscar, Grammy, and Golden Globe Awards for "Lord of the Rings," spoke to the students and faculty of HUC-JIR/NY on December 4, 2007, in the Petrie Synagogue.

Howard Shore spoke with Cantor Bruce Ruben, Director of the School of Sacred Music, about his career and his approach to composition, as the composer of scores for such movies as "The Departed," "Gangs of New York," "The Aviator," and "Mrs. Doubtfire," among others, and as the original music director and co-creator for "Saturday Night Live."

He received a series of Oscars, Grammys, and Golden Globes for his work on the trilogy "The Lord of the Rings." Selections from a DVD of "The Lord of the Rings" was shown to illustrate Mr. Shore's compositional style.

Among his current projects is an opera "The Fly," being written for the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and the Los Angeles Opera. After attending the Berklee School of Music, Shore toured and recorded with the rock band "Lighthouse" from 1969-1972.

In early November, the School of Sacred Music featured a Master Series event with renowned Opera singer Regina Resnik.
