 Certificate in Jewish Communal Service Program Graduates Honored A culmination ceremony for graduates of the Certificate in Jewish Communal Service Program will be held on August 8, 2007. The ceremony will be led by Rabbi Hayim Herring, Executive Director of STAR (Synagogue Transformation and Renewal), and this year's Rabbi Louis Bernstein Scholar, a position made possible by Ruth Ziegler, in memory of her beloved father and our esteemed alumnus, Rabbi Louis Bernstein, of blessed memory, who was ordained at HUC-JIR in Cincinnati in 1906. Bob Kopple, Chair of the Los Angeles Board of Overseers, and Ginger Jacobs representing the Union for Reform Judaism will attend the ceremony, as will Rhea Coskey and Elisa Wayne, Co-Chairs of the School of Jewish Communal Service Advisory Board. This occasion also marks a milestone for Marla Abraham, as her first Culmination Exercises as the interim Director of the School of Jewish Communal Service Students in the Jewish Communal Service Program have spent the past two summers studying Judaica, management and leadership concepts, contemporary Jewish issues, and Jewish history and society under leading faculty and administration and practitioners in Jewish education and communal service, including the College-Institute's Sarah Benor, David Kaufman, Rabbi Richard Levy, and Michele Prince of the Kalsman Institute on Judaism and Health - as well as with Rabbi Jeffrey Marx, Jacob Cunningham of UCLA, and alumna Miriam Prum Hess, SJCS '78, and Phil Liff-Grief of the Bureau of Jewish Education. The students, who have previous professional experience in Jewish communal service, earned 22 credits to satisfy the certificate.
