News from the Kalsman Institute: Publications, Awards, and Lectures

The Kalsman Institute, a department of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion/LA, is a center for training, collaboration and dialogue at the intersection of Judaism and health.
- Susan Rosenthal, director of the National Center for Jewish Healing (NCJH) announced the publication of her article in
the Journal of Jewish Communal Service Jewish Family Service edition, alongside articles by other Kalsman Partners
Sally Weber, Marjie Sokoll, Nina Beth Cardin, and Anne Freedman.
- Bruce Feldstein was awarded the Isaac Stein Award for Compassionate Care.
- Phil Cushman published "A Burning World, An Absent God: Midrash, Hermeneutics, and Relational Psychoanalysis" in
Contemporary Psychoanalysis.
- Long time HUC faculty Rita Lowenthal published a powerful personal story: One-Way Ticket, Our Son's Addiction to
Heroin.
- Rachel Yoskowitz was cited in the Detroit Jewish News for her continued work coordinating pro-bono healthcare
services provided by Jewish physicians.
- Kalsman Director Bill Cutter's most recent chapter, "What to Pursue: The Obligation to Heal" due out this winter,
will be published in a URJ Press book about rabbis' personal cancer experiences.
- Kalsman will co-sponsor the second South American Jewish Healing Conference, with Kalsman Director Bill Cutter as
keynote speaker.
- Valley Beth Shalom in Los Angeles is working to launch a congregation-based Jewish healing center.
