Roots of Human Violence Explored in Dance
Liturgy Program at HUC-JIR/Cincinnati - April 24 at 11 am
Growth in Motion, Inc. will present a dance liturgy entitled "FLIGHT,
FIGHT, FREEZE! and the Wolf shall dwell with the Lamb (Isaiah 11:6)"
on Wednesday, April 24, 2002 at Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute
of Religion at 11:00 am in the S.H. and Helen R. Scheuer Chapel,
3101 Clifton Avenue. Directed by Fanchon Shur, this unique work
of dance theater is inspired by the animal imagery from Isaiah’s
prophecy. Admission is free and open to the public.
This piece is designed to facilitate and challenge emotional growth
for individuals and culturally diverse audiences. The performance
is a dynamic celebration of the animal nature found in people and
offers a revolutionary approach to understanding the roots of human
violence. Audience participants will explore deep, primal impulses
and raw wildness to gain insights into how this energy can be transformed
into a more positive outcome. “In a world where even the lambs can’t
seem to dwell together, how timely is this exploration of our instincts
as sources for understanding and peacemaking,” comments Shur.
The music of "FLIGHT, FIGHT, FREEZE!" is composed and performed
by Bonia Shur, director of liturgical arts at HUC-JIR. Performers
include Fanchon Shur, Cantor Sharon Kohn, cantor, Isaac M. Temple
and cantor-in-residence, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion, and the FLIGHT, FIGHT, FREEZE! Ensemble including: Rose
Baz, Michelle Bump, Jeri Gatch, Rachel James, Melissa Jordan, Colleen
McCarty, Holly Price, and Jeanne Speier.
Shur has been a dancer, choreographer, and movement therapist
for over 30 years. She was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of
Fame for her “groundbreaking work with arts and communities” in
1990. Growth in Motion’s mission is to offer training in understanding
the body, its different expressions, its ability to heal, and its
power to build community. The work is a synthesis of dance, music,
and theatre that draws on personal histories, myth, ritual, literature,
psychology, somatics, and movement science.
Project support for "FLIGHT, FIGHT, FREEZE!" is provided by a
grant from the Fine Arts Fund of the Community Arts Fund.
