Rabbi David Ellenson to teach on "Diverse Perspectives on Jewish Legal Texts" at the JCC of Manhattan on February 3

Diverse Perspectives on Jewish Legal Texts

Rabbi Dr. David Ellenson, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and Rabbi Saul J. Berman, director of Edah, will discuss their diverse perspectives on the significance of a set of Jewish legal texts. At each session, they will present and analyze a specific rabbinic responsum (judicial decision) dealing with a current issue. They will reflect together on texts related to conversion, the relationship between Jews and Christians, and education. The discussion will range from investigation of the historical background and philosophical premises of the responsa, to their place in legal history and their spiritual and communal implications.
