Please join us at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion Museum,
One West 4th Street, New York, NY, for a lively discussion on Jewish humor and
the cartoons of aging with cartoonists Mort Gerberg, Samuel H. Gross, and Peter
Kuper, moderated by Arie Kaplan. Gerberg and Gross' cartoons appear in the current
exhibition, The Art of Aging, on view through July 2, 2004 at the HUC-JIR Museum.
Samuel H. Gross began cartooning in 1962. His cartoons have appeared in such
magazines as The New Yorker, Harvard Business Review, Esquire, Cosmopolitan,
and Good Housekeeping. Gross was the Cartoon Editor of National Lampoon and
Parents Magazine. His cartoon collections include More Gross, An Elephant is
Soft and Mushy, Your Mother is a Remarkable Woman, I am Blind and My Dog is
Dead, Catss by Gross. In the late 1990s, he became involved in electronic publishing
ventures with cartoons playing an important role.
Mort Gerberg's cartoons have appeared in numerous publications, including Look,
The Saturday Evening Post, Harper's, The Saturday Review, Publisher's Weekly,
Playboy, The New Yorker and Harvard Business Review. He is the author of many
books, including Cartooning: The Art and the Business, Joy in Mudville, The
Big Book of Baseball Humor, Bearly Bearable, Geographunny, The All Jewish Cartoon
Collection, More Spaghetti and I say Art, you should take it personally.
Peter Kuper is a comic book artist and illustrator whose illustrations and
comics appear regularly in Time, The New York Times, and Mad Magazine, where
he illustrates SPY vs. SPY. His most recent books are an adaptation of Franz
Kafka's The Metamorphosis and Sticks and Stones, a wordless graphic novel about
the rise and fall of empires due to publish in October 2004.
Arie Kaplan is a comedy writer. He has written for Mad Magazine, Entertainment
Weekly, Time Out New York, Teen Beat and the MTV series "Total Request
Live." He authored the series "Wizards of Wit" for "Reform
Judaism Magazine and recently finished "Kings of Comics" following
his success of "Wizards of Wit."
