The Running Rabbis in Marathon to Promote HUC-JIR's Soup Kitchen

On Sunday November 6, Rabbis Benjamin David and Scott Weiner will run the ING New York City Marathon in hopes of raising awareness of the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institue of Religion's Soup Kitchen. The soup kitchen, which is operated by HUC-JIR students and area volunteers, is open Monday nights at 1 West 4th Street, and provides food, clothing, and counsel to those in need. Rabbi David and Rabbi Weiner believe that, by running the marathon, they will not only attract attention to the soup kitchen and the valuable resources it offers those in the community, but help demonstrate the importance of social action at large. As they say, if two rabbis can run twenty six point two miles, then just about anything is possible. Rabbi David, running his third marathon in three years, works at Temple Sinai of Roslyn. Rabbi Weiner, running in his first marathon, works at the Hebrew Tabernacle Congregation in Washington Heights. They were ordained by the HUC-JIR in May of 2004.
