HUC-JIR/Cincinnati presents 31st Anniversary Hallel Service by Bonia Shur, Director of Liturgical Arts - March 1 at 11:10 AM

Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion Presents

31st Anniversary Hallel Service

It is a popular tradition at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR)-Bonia Shur's Hallel Service. On Wednesday, March 1, 2006, members of the faculty, students, staff, and friends of HUC-JIR will perform the 31st Anniversary Hallel Service, written and composed by distinguished composer Bonia Shur.

Bonia Shur created this unique Hallel Service, a special collection of psalms of praise that has not been orchestrated anywhere else in this particular, captivating way. Members of the HUC-JIR community will perform this extraordinary piece in the S. H. and Helen R. Scheuer Chapel on the HUC-JIR campus, 3101 Clifton Avenue, during morning services at 11:10 AM. The event is free and open to the community.

Bonia Shur is a major force in the Reform Jewish movement in North America. In 1974 he was appointed director of Liturgical Arts at HUC-JIR in Cincinnati, where he has taught generations of rabbinical students. In addition to his vast liturgical repertoire-over 250 of his published compositions are in use in synagogues throughout the country and abroad-he has written for film, television, and theater. Mr. Shur's music is vibrant, dynamic, and highly individual. He has an extremely diverse background. Born in Latvia, Bonia escaped the Nazi invasion, fought in the Russian army, immigrated to Israel, and lived on a kibbutz before coming to the United States in 1960.
