HUC-JIR/Los Angeles Hosts Seminar for Hebrew Language Professionals: August 13-17

Professor Rivka Dori, Director of Hebrew Studies at HUC-JIR/Los Angeles, has been asked for the second year in a row to coordinate a Seminar for Hebrew Language Professionals on behalf of the National Middle Eastern Languages Resource Center (NMELRC).

Professor Dori has invited the Bureau of Jewish Education in Los Angeles and UCLA-Language Resource Center (LRC) to collaborate with her on this project.

Aviva Kadosh, a Hebrew Consultant from the Bureau of Jewish Education in Los Angeles, is working with Professor Dori as a Co-Chair for the Seminar, and UCLA-LRC is promoting it on its internet site.

The seminar is open to all Hebrew language professionals and registration is now in progress through the NMELRC site: (Go to Hebrew then to Hebrew seminar, then to Application Form)

Hebrew Proficiency Levels in Four Language Skills

Participants will become familiar with the criteria defined by the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines to identify learners' levels and abilities in productive skills in Hebrew.

The Hebrew Class: Structure, Activities, and Teacher's Role and Behavior

9:00 AM - Noon Articulating Learning Goals for All Four Language Skills

Participants will learn the terminology, process, and techniques used to articulate goals for individual lessons, learning units, and a curriculum.

Participants will learn how the Hebrew Proficiency Guidelines inform the structure of the lesson plan, the language activities for the development of all skills, and the role of the teacher in the proficiency-based classroom.

Materials and Assessment

9:00 AM - Noon Identifying and Developing Teaching Materials

Participants will learn the techniques of identifying and developing teaching materials for all proficiency levels, and for different age groups, and educational settings in all four Hebrew language skills.
