 HUC-JIR Leadership Institute Heads to Israel On Thursday, February 5, 2009, over 40 Leadership Institute for Congregational School Educators (LICSE) participants and mentors will travel to Israel for a 10-day seminar. This seminar will examine the central role that Israel plays in Jewish education and how educational leaders can make Israel a relevant and vital component of congregational schools. LICSE participants will visit a school, meet with Israeli educators, participate in sessions with David Horowitz, Steve Israel, and Rachel Korazim, attend a TuBishvat Seder, as well as celebrate the B’nai Mitzvot of three of our participants. Dalia Tibon and Neomi Frisch of Leo Baeck-Lokey Institute and Dr. Alex Sinclair, a lecturer at the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies and an adjunct assistant professor at JTS will work with the group to create learning experiences that will incorporate a multi-denominational perspective. Participants and mentors have also been busy planning Daily Tefillot, Ongai Shabbat, Dvrai Torah, Havdallah, and creative ways to communicate with their schools while in Israel through Skype and blogs. The Leadership Institute for Congregational School Educators offers congregational school educators the opportunity to expand their knowledge and build a new vision for school leadership. The Leadership Institute is guided by the vision of the New York School of Education at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) and the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) and is fully funded by the UJA-Federation of New York. This historic opportunity will enable HUC-JIR and JTS to join together to further the leadership capacity, pedagogic skills and Judaic knowledge of congregational school educators. This program is open to candidates from all denominations in the New York, Long Island, Westchester and the greater metropolitan area extending to New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. To qualify, educators must have at least two full years of experience leading a congregational school. Candidates must also demonstrate support from the congregation’s Rabbi, Board President, and Education Chair to establish the terms of the financial and time commitments.
