Your Year in Israel

Communications

Mail

Throughout the year, all your mail can be sent to:

Your Name
c/o Hebrew Union College
13 King David Street
Jerusalem ISRAEL

Letters sent airmail will take approximately ten days to two weeks to arrive from North America to Israel and vice versa. However, people associated with the College often go back and forth to the States and are usually willing to take mail with them. Therefore, remember to bring American, or Canadian, stamps.

Manila envelopes and packages mailed via "Parcel Post" will take at least 6-8 weeks to arrive. You will receive an arrival notice in the mail and will need to pick up the package at the post office. They are not delivered to the school or to your door for security reasons.

NOTE: Packages may be subject to import duties based upon their contents. See the section on Customs. Packages sent via "Air Freight" must be picked up at Ben Gurion Airport.

Telephone Contact

In emergencies, during HUC school hours, you may be contacted through the HUC Switchboard (call person to person):
011-972 (Israel code) 2 (Jerusalem code) - 620-3333
Faxes may also be sent to the HUC fax: 011-972-2-625-1478

Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm Sunday-Thursday
Closed: Friday, Saturday, and Holidays

Note: Israeli time is U.S. Eastern Standard Time + 7 hours.

We recommend that students and their dear ones compare telephone costs in Israel with costs in the United States or Canada. You may find that a call from Israel to North America using an Israeli provider is cheaper than a direct-dialed call from North America.

In Israel, you may use a Phone Card or dial collect at:

177-100-2727 (AT&T) or
177-150-2727 (MCI) or
177-105-2727 (Canada Direct)
177-102-2227 (Sprint)

E-Mail Services

The Danny Rechler Computer Center in the Abramov Library offers students access to e-mail services through the HUC Internet system. Students can choose to open a private account, for email access from their homes, with an American provider (e.g. America Online or Compuserve), or an Israeli provider (e.g. Netvision or Jerusalem OnLine). If you pick up America Online or CompuServe in the States before you come to Israel (you can receive the software free by mail) you can set up your account in the U.S., and in Israel you will only have to change your connection number. In addition to regular monthly charges, AOL and CompuServe have international surcharges for use from Israel; contact the companies in the States to inquire. You will be billed on your American credit card. To set up an account through an Israeli provider, call Netvision, Aquanet or Jerusalem OnLine (972-2-532-7027 - www.jrol.com) when you arrive. You will need either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer. 1998 fees were Jerusalem OnLine - $25. per month for unlimited hours; Netvision - $15. for 10 hours / $25. for 20 hours.

Helpful hint: Make sure you know how to operate your electronic equipment and e-mail software before you arrive. Bring instructions.
